They use formal language with people older than you or whom you don't know and informal language with friends, family, and relatives. So a hello in English is hallo in the informal German tone and Guten Tag as a formal version of it.

German language syntax

The German word order differs from English and other languages — so you can't create proper German sentences using the English word order. Else you need to grasp German word order and use that structure. Be, also mindful of the fact that improper word order can impart different meanings to the sentence.

Tekamolo is the acronym that would help you form proper German sentences. where,

Te  → when does it happen?

Ka → why does it happen?

Mo → How does it happen?

Lo → Where does it happen?

So, the correct german word order is subject + verb + Te + Ka + Mo + Lo

Let's demonstrate this by translating an English sentence that has all the components of an acronym Tekamolo, into a German sentence.

English sentence → I am driving to Kathmandu today by car for a meeting.

Here,

Subject → who →I → ich (in german)

Verb → what action → drive →  Fahrt ( in german)

Te  → when does it happen → Today → heute (in german)

Ka → why does it happen → For a meeting (für ein Treffen)

Mo → How does it happen → By car → mit dem Auto (in german)
